As I read Kim Phillips-Fein's Country of Lords, I was struck by the sheer tenacity and creativity with which these figures have tried to maintain social hierarchies in America, even as we celebrate our commitment to equality. It was a fascinating but also somewhat disheartening journey through the history of Neo-Aristocrats, Social Darwinists, Tech Utopians, and their ongoing struggle to maintain power and privilege.
